These formations are similar to fringing reefs because they also border shorelines. The next stage in a coral reef’s formation is a barrier reef. Still, they are the best place to find brain, star, and other hard and soft corals. Although patch reefs grow upward and outward, they rarely reach the surface. They are often close in proximity to one another, only separated by surrounding sand rings and seagrass. Patch reefs are small, isolated reefs that grow from the open bottom of an island platform or continental shelf, typically within lagoons.
