Upon completion of their lease in 2013, the owners of Sherman Clay, a family owned business since 1870, ultimately decided not to renew their lease, downsize their operation and leave the Portland market. After 30 years on Southeast Woodstock, Sherman Clay/Moe’s Pianos moved to the newly developed Pearl District in 2003 situating itself in a beautifully renovated 18,000 square foot building, complete with piano workshop and a 125 seat recital room. In 1989 Moe’s Pianos became part of the Sherman Clay family and Mitch stayed on as General Manager, a position he’s held for the past 25 years. Moe’s Pianos is named after Maurice (Moe) Schuster, Mitch’s grandfather, a violinist with the symphony who loved to rebuild pianos. It was the next logical step for Mitch whose passion for music led to his decision to join the family business, Moe’s Pianos, 30 years ago. Plans for a new store began to take shape soon after. And among other things, he and his sister, Brenda, won the vocal duet division at the national Grange talent contest in Eugene, Oregon in 1985.īut it was at Malone College his life took a turn toward piano tuning. For the past eight years, Widder has been the Ohio State Grange chaplain. ![]() That energy transfers over to his activities in the Grange organization as well. He still takes on the occasional substitute job, usually something music-related, partly because he’s a man who admittedly “cannot sit around.” For 35 years he taught and was principal at several area schools. They sang in places like Costa Rica and South Korea, among others.Īfter graduation, Widder earned a master’s degree in education from Ashland University. While there he was in the school’s well-traveled chorale four years. In 1975 he went off to Malone College (now University) in Canton, graduating with a major in elementary education and a minor in vocal music. ![]()
